gitmereba

A local clone of your GitHub accounts in a native Gitea, so you can keep working even if GitHub goes down.

Rust Tauri 2 Gitea systemd

What it is

gitmereba is a Linux desktop application written in Rust. Given a GitHub user, a read-only token and a folder, it runs one Gitea per account on your machine (native, no Docker) and keeps mirrors of your repositories in it, synchronised periodically even with the window closed. It is not just a backup: if GitHub goes down, you can switch a repository to a writable copy, push to your local Gitea and keep working; when GitHub comes back, gitmereba reconciles the changes without ever force-pushing.

Features

  • A separate local Gitea per account, provisioned automatically; supports several accounts.
  • Periodic synchronisation with a systemd user timer and desktop notifications on failure.
  • Per-repository status and a choice of what to include or exclude.
  • Contingency mode: writable copy while GitHub is down and later reconciliation without force-push.
  • Snapshots of branches and tags before every synchronisation, to recover rewritten or deleted history.
  • Repositories deleted on GitHub are kept paused; nothing is removed automatically.
  • Optional sharing on your local network over HTTPS, with restricted users.
  • A doctor command that checks the system and each account; Tauri 2 window and full CLI, with no Node or CDN.

Security

  • Secrets live only in the system keyring, never in files, logs or process arguments.
  • A read-only token is used to synchronise; the write token is requested only when reconciling and is not stored.
  • The Gitea binary is downloaded from the official site and verified with SHA-256 and a GPG signature before use.
  • Hardened Gitea: listens only on 127.0.0.1 by default, with no registration, anonymous access, SSH or Actions.
  • Append-only, hash-chained audit log; the use of unsafe is forbidden in the Rust code.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need Docker?

No. gitmereba runs Gitea natively on your machine.

What happens if GitHub goes down?

You can switch a repository to a writable copy, push to your local Gitea and keep working. When GitHub comes back, gitmereba reconciles the changes.

Does it force-push to GitHub?

Never. If GitHub received other changes in the meantime, it stops and tells you so that you can merge them yourself.

Where does it store my tokens?

In the system keyring (Secret Service, GNOME Keyring or KWallet), never in files or logs.

What licence is it distributed under?

GPL-3.0 or later. It is a pre-1.0 version, so changes may occur between versions.
